Decipher is a new brand in UK contemporary furniture, launched at 100% Design London 2010. Our debut range is Elter, a selection of tables manufactured in Corian® which were inspired by the use of stone in the English Lake District. Decipher is a company with a commitment to utilising highly skilled manufacturing companies in the UK. Elter was inspired in Cumbria, designed in Manchester and manufactured in Derbyshire.
'I often work within very narrow channels of constraint to create innovative products for consumer brands and leading industrial manufacturing companies. I wanted to create part of my company that was not bound by the functional and technical constraints found in my product design work. I also wanted to create a brand that embodies the way that I look at my life experiences and the world that surrounds me. I intend to utilise the in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes and production and blend that with creative freedom to produce inspirational furniture objects that people will love to live with and use in their daily lives'.
Michael Thomas, Founder
Biography
Michael Thomas was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England in 1972 and although creativity always played a large part of his early life, he took an unorthodox route into design. After serving four years in the Royal Air Force he went on to study Product Design and Development at the University of Salford followed by a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design.
After designing a wide range of products from consumer goods to scientific instruments for an established Manchester design consultancy, he branched out to found his own Product Design Company, PDu in 2002. PDu quickly gained a reputation for innovative product designs for industrial and consumer markets. The strength of the company is integrating the commercial needs of the client, the functional and emotional needs of the user and the realities of manufacturing. Michael’s work has ranged from handheld controls for the mining industry to projects for household brand names such as DeLonghi and Morphy Richards.
Michael has always pursued his passion for pure creative design, in particular, contemporary furniture. Focussing on blending creative talent with in-depth experience of design for manufacture, he set up the Decipher brand 2009 to design, make and sell high quality, low volume furniture pieces direct to specifiers and end users.
